When I started my career as a young professional in 2007, I was privileged to be mentored directly by Sim Shagaya, Gbenga Sesan, and Niyi Adesanya, among others. One key lesson that made an indelible mark on me was a statement made by Gbenga Sesan: “No one is too big to be ignored, and no one is too small to be disrespected.”
They always emphasized that your accomplishments and name will bring you into rooms, but you must drop them at the door and learn from every person and opportunity before you. Our best work is often still ahead, and you can’t get blinded by who you have been—that’s in the past!
They also stressed the importance of paying it forward. When you see a younger person who needs help, don’t wait for them to reach out. It’s boring to be the ONLY successful person in the room. Helping others succeed will never take away from your own accomplishments or hinder your progress.
God won’t go broke for blessing more people.
